In the following I am going to describe a
cost saving way to build your own terrarium using Styrodur. With some
craftsmanship and a few hours time you will be able to build a terrarium
with the following measurements: 125 x 60 x 60 cm (l x h x w). Apart from
about 8 hours of time you will need approximately 60 € for the different
materials.
 |
required materials:
4 Styrodur panels 20 x 600 x 1250 mm
assembly glue
Gauze for construction
flat wood blocks
2 glass panel
sticky handles
guide bars for the top and bottom
2 guide bars for the sides
optional: tile adhesive
polystyrene plate
wax glaze
tools: folding meter, Cutter, T-square, scissors, pencil, paint brush,
container, wood cutting saw. |
|
Do you have all the tools and
materials required? Then let’s get started!
First you have to cut one of the plates into two parts with a length
of 62 cm each. A thin strap will remain which you can throw away.
These two parts are forming the lower and upper part of the terrarium.
Now you can start gluing the parts together with assembly glue as
shown in the picture. After everything has dried, cut out holes for
ventilation into the walls. In order to do this, you have to put
everything on that side, in which the holes should be cut in to.
The holes should have the following measurements: 60 x 40 cm.
Out of the cut out panel, two bars (56 x 20 cm each) get cut out and
glued in to the front of the hole.
|
 |
 |
On the upper side of the
terrarium you also have to cut out a rectangle to create space for the
HQL-lamp, which will be installed on the top.
Now gauze and wood blocks (which were sawed in the right shape) are
glued across the openings on top and on both sides of the terrarium
using assembly glue. |
|
Afterwards the on length cut
guide bars get glued to the top, the bottom (on top of the bars) and
to the sides.
Two suitable glass panels, equipped with sticky handles, as well as
adequate technology and decoration (lightning, thermometer, hygrometer,
adequate ground, branches and twigs for climbing, plants...) put into
place and the terrarium is ready to be used.
Optionally the walls can be decorated with pieces of polystyrene,
which have to be treated with tile adhesive and sealed with wax glaze.
But generally there are no limits to one’s imagination!

The advantage of the
terrarium would be – apart from being quite inexpensive – the good
thermal insulation.
Likewise Styrodur is easy to work on, quite light but nonetheless very
stable. Therefore later adjustments will be easy to realize.
