The Ambanja males show a bright green to yellow
basic colour, partly with bluish particles. The vertical stripes are
distinct blue or dark blue with red dots. The lateral stripes are
white but can also have a bluish colour. The 2nd and 3rd
vertical stripes from the back to the belly form a ‘Y’. Lips and the
corners of the mouth are white to yellow, the head shimmers green with
red particles. The lids can be red with yellow radial pattern.

The females are mud coloured with darker horizontal
stripes (West of Ambanja) respectively brownish black (North of
Ambanja). The lateral stripe is whitely grey, the lips and corners of
the mouth are yellow. The head has bluish scales. The cranial edges
are distinct red.
